Extended Inner Ring Bearings (VSB Series)
Extended-inner-ring spherical roller bearing configurations for shaft arrangements that use an integral locking feature instead of an adapter sleeve.
Mounting Concept for Suitable Shaft Arrangements
A VSB-style bearing uses an extended inner ring and a model-specific locking arrangement. Some designs mount directly on a cylindrical shaft without an adapter sleeve. This can reduce the number of mounting components, but it does not remove the need to verify shaft tolerance, axial location, locking method, available space, and the selected bearing's ratings.
Design Features
- Extended inner ring: Provides the mounting surface used by the selected locking arrangement.
- Locking method: Set-screw, collar, or other retention details must match the exact model.
- Internal design: Load rating, speed capability, clearance, cage, and self-aligning behavior are model-specific.
- Shaft interface: Confirm shaft diameter, tolerance, surface condition, shoulders, and axial restraint.
Checks Before Using a Direct-Mount Design
- Confirm whether the complete unit includes a separate housing, seals, collar, or other locking parts.
- Compare shaft and housing fits with the bearing supplier's mounting instructions.
- Check residual internal clearance after mounting where the selected design requires it.
- Use the tools and tightening procedure specified for the locking arrangement.
Applications Where This Arrangement May Be Considered
- Industrial fans and blowers
- Belt conveyors and roller conveyors
- Agricultural machinery (augers, elevators)
- Light to medium-duty material handling
- General industrial rotating equipment
Comparison with a Standard SRB and Sleeve
Compare both arrangements when mounting access or component count is a concern. The decision should be based on the exact VSB model and the surrounding shaft and housing, including:
- radial and axial load, speed, temperature, and duty cycle;
- shaft tolerance, housing fit, shoulders, available axial space, and locking access;
- required clearance, cage, lubrication, sealing, and maintenance procedure;
- model-specific load ratings and permissible speed.
A dimensional resemblance does not confirm that a direct-mount VSB design can replace a standard spherical roller bearing and sleeve assembly.
